DANIEL SHAPIRO

Daniel Shapiro, MD, FACS is an Assistant Professor of Urologic Oncology and surgeon-scientist at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. His clinical practice focuses on the care of patients with localized and advanced kidney cancer. He completed his urology residency at the University of Wisconsin and fellowship training in urologic oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Shapiro leads a translational research laboratory investigating the kidney cancer tumor immune microenvironment. His research seeks to understand how chemokine signaling modulates immune exclusion, potentially driving treatment resistance and metastasis. His work integrates spatial transcriptomics, single-cell sequencing, murine models of kidney cancer, and microphysiologic platforms to study T cell signaling. The overarching goal is to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets to improve kidney cancer outcomes.

His research is supported by the Department of Defense Academy of Kidney Cancer Investigators Early Career Scholar Award, the Wisconsin Urologic Research Institute, and the Wisconsin Urological Society. He has published extensively and was awarded the Christopher G. Wood Rising Star Award by the Kidney Cancer Association in 2022.

Dr. Shapiro remains committed to advancing interdisciplinary collaboration in kidney cancer research and to improving the lives of patients through research-driven innovation and compassionate, evidence-based care.
